Inca Adventure May 10

Postby SacredRides on Thu Jan 10, 2008 5:54 pm

Welcome everyone! This is the online discussion board for all participants in our May 10-19 Inca Adventure DH tour in Peru. Please introduce yourself on the forum, add a photo or two, and tell people what you do when you're not riding (job, hobbies, etc...)

Formal studies have shown that tour participants have 34.8% more fun when they get to know their fellow riding buddies beforehand*

Hi everyone

Postby SacredRides on Mon Jan 28, 2008 4:51 pm

It's me, Mike. Again. I won't be joining you in Peru as I'll be having my first baby right around then, but I'll be with you in spirit.

Just wanted to mention a couple of things regarding our community-based tourism style of travel:

We like to give back to the communities where we ride. If it wasn't for them and the trails that run through them, then we couldn't do what we do. So it seems only natural that we give back. To that end:

-we're donating 2% of your tour costs to local development projects. Wayo is well-connected to the communities where we ride and he is working with them to help decide how these funds would best be used. Hopefully, once we get these projects up and running, you'll be able to visit and perhaps even contribute your time and effort to some of these projects

-we encourage you to bring books and pencils with you to Peru to donate to the local schoolkids, many of whom can not afford these basic items. You'll have lots of opportunities to hand these out on your trip, and you'll have a great time doing it.

-you'll visit a community where we have donated several bikes on our past few visits, as part of our Bikes Without Borders program. BWB is our non-profit organization aimed at strengthening communities through bikes. We are working on the new website and are actively seeking volunteers to lead local chapters across the country. If you're interested in getting involved, please e-mail me mike@bikeswithoutborders.org

Cheers!

I guess someone has to go first....

<<<My name is Karen. I'm coming down from Vancouver with some of my good riding buddies. We ride the North Shore; Sunshine Coast; Whistler; and other regions throughout B.C. I'm super stoked about going to Peru and have been diligently putting together lists of stuff to bring; stuff to do before I go. I work in a machine shop here in Canada; I ride my bike whenever possible; go to the gym; yoga; read; do trail work; hike the local mountains; bake.

Hi

I'm Wayo, well my real name is Eduardo but Wayo is easier and everybody calls me Wayo.

I'm now 33 and I have been on a bike since the age of 10. First with BMX, then with XC bikes, then with DH bikes and now with an All Mountain bike.

I'm married and I have 2 beautiful childrens. I hope you can meet my family on the first day when we go for some ceviche. Don't know ceviche? It's a typical dish made of fresh fish just cooked with lemons. Be careful that there are ceviche dishes in Mexico, Chile and many other countries but the original and the best is in PERU!

I like to be very competitive so I have been racing for almost all my life. I have went to lot's of competitions with my BMX and the last one was the World Championships in 1992. With MTB I have been in almost all South America racing the Pan-Am's and the Bolivarian Championships. My best result there was a third place in Elite men and I'm proud to say that it's the only medal for Peru on the highest category of mountain biking. I hope someday someone of my friends wins a Pan-am.

I like to make friends, I like a lot the outdoors (that's why I have chosen this job) and I can´t live surrounded by 4 walls on an office.

I will be your guide in Peru and I will try to make your trip the best trip of your life!

I just need from you to come with a lot of enthusiasm and in a very good shape. Remember that riding on the Andes is not a joke :)

Here is one of my reacent pictures riding and posing :)

I will like to hear about everybody, the bike you ride, the trails you ride....

Thank's Karen for your post, I can't wait to meet you and show the good trails here!

Cheers,

Wayo

I guess I am up...

My name is Justin. I currently live in Seattle, WA, USA, but I am originally from Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. It's been about 8 years since I moved here to Seattle. I ride on the Shore in Vancouver often, as well as Bellingham, down in Oregon and around Seattle. In the winter time I typically ski a lot, and don't ride too much unless the snow is bad.

For my job, I run the IT department for a small software company, and unfortunately spend far more time than I would like riding my desk instead of my bike (or skiing).

I am very psyched about this trip. As soon as I found out about it I knew I had to do it. I look forward to seeing everyone in Peru!

Here are a couple of pix:

My name is Tamara and I'm part of the Vancouver clan of "amigas" coming on this trip. I spent a few days around Cusco on my honeymoon about 13 years ago so I am doubly excited about re-visiting it...and on a BIKE! My husband and 2 boys will cheer me on from home.

I try to fit riding in between the usual demands of family/work life. I work part-time as an occupational therapist and try to spend the rest of my time outdoors as much as possible (riding, exploring local trails, skiing, gardening etc.). Ten days in the outdoor splendor of Peru will be pure bliss for me!

...Oh...and I love food about as much as I love mountain biking! So, I am looking forward to the ceviche that you'll introduce us to Wayo! (along fresh empanadas and any other Peruvian specialities...)

MMMM...ceviche. I tried some on New Years! I'm sure it is not as good as the Peruvian ceviche but it certainly was delish. So I look forward to it as well.

Justin: The picture of you riding the structure...is that the "Pimp Coaster" on Lower Crippler, Mt. Fromme? Good shot.

Karen.

P.S.: How do I post a picture? I'm computer challenged. Thanks.

Hey everyone! My name is Kirsten and I'm with the group of girls from Vancouver. That marauding bunch..

Like most of you, my job in an indoor thing so I like to spend as much time as I can outside playing. I'm a disaster planner for the Vancouver Health Authority - things are pretty busy at the moment so I'm really looking forward to this trip!! I've never been to South America but I'm sure that Peru will leave a wonderful first impression :)

Wayo, you asked about the types of riding and what we ride. Like the other girls from Vancouver, I'm often on the North Shore. I've done some DH racing (discovered I'd rather freeride with my gallies than race, any day), XC etc. You can usually catch me playing on the skinnies and trying most stunts that aren't more than 6 or 7 feet off the ground.

I ride a Kona Stab and a Kona Dawg Supreme. Yup, still riding my first DH bike - longest relationship yet! ;) I'll post some pics soon. Look forward to hearing from the others!

Hi Wayo,

Our group of 5 from Vancouver have some questions for you and Mike . We're drinking Pisco sours and eating empanadas planning for our exciting adventure in May with you. Here are our questions so far- please forgive us for asking anything overly obvioius! Some of us have experience guiding here in Canada and have some first aid training/experience--- so we are wanting to plan what we put into our own packs very carefully.

1. What access to bike parts will we have in the event of various problems? ie; busted rear derailleur or hanger, fried brake pads etc? will Wayo be carrying parts?
2. on that note- Wayo, what tools will you be carrying? will we have access to a good shop in lima and Cuzco?
3. First aid supplies- again, what will our guides have?
4. Food and Drink questions:
- we've been told to be VERY careful about eating and drinking in Peru--
will there be bottled water throughout our days? will the breakfast and lunch menus be safe for us? what kinds of snacks will you offer?
5. other bike questions:
what kind of tires do you suggest we run? Megan Illingsworth(October trip 2007) told us that we'll get lots of flats --how many tubes should we bring?
6. Clothing suggestions: can you give us a better idea re: clothing for the month of May for the areas we are going to? will long pants and long sleeves be the wise choice for most of the rides?
7. any advice/suggestions re: insurance coverage for bikes in terms of theft and loss? the trip insurance only covers $500 for "luggage"-
8. Wayo, will there be a 2nd guide? do you have a satellite phone? what is your First Aid training and background?
9. Immunizations-- do you suggest we get the Rabies innoculation? will we enounter a lot of stray dogs who like to chase etc?
10. Altitude Sickness: do you suggest we take the Altitude Sickness medication before we start our days in Cuzco? do most of your clients opt for this?
11. a few of us are nervous about the driving and vehicle transportation. we have heard "stories" about how nerve-racking this can be. will we have a good driver and vehicle? what can you tell us about this?
12. can Karen bring her butane curling iron?
13. is there a good place in Cuzco for Tamara to get a pedicure?
14. Kirsten wants to know if a Peruvian wax is as "appealing" as a Brazilian?

okay, okay. too many Pisco sours!! too much vino at the party here....yikes!

thank you for reading our questions-- I guess the question about the bike insurance and bike parts are the most pressing at this point. We want to take care of these items in the next few weeks. Thanks in advance for your patience!!

I was wondering about Questions 12, 13, 14 myself.
You girls are very funny
Hi, my name is Naoko. I live in Los Angeles, CA but born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. I work as a physical therapist. I am very excited about the trip. I hear the seafood in Peru is fabulous.
I think I am in pretty good shape but am not sure about the altitude. I will be puffing and huffing some air for sure. I mainly do all mountain type rides plus downhilling but don't quite do jumpings (yet...). I will be bringing Transition Syren which is the first ever women's specific freeride bike. I don't have it yet but have ordered and have been waiting anxiously. I am looking forward to meeting you all!

About the travel insurance, I found one or two insurance companies who covers up to 1500 dollars for luggage. I can get more details about the name of the company etc. if you like. I am definitely getting the one that covers the most for the luggage (= bicycle).

Hey All,

Looking forward to meeting you all in May and getting some solid riding in and enjoying the local culture...

Me: New Zealander living and working as a fire safety engineer in San Francisco. I love the outdoors and feel like a hamster in a cage if I spend too much time behind the desk - laptops are awesome!!

I have been riding bikes for a few years now and have had the opportunity to ride in some pretty amazing places. This will be my first time to South America, so super stoked to be on this trip.

I have too many toys, but the ones with pedals are the Intense M3, Transition Bottle Rocket and Santa Cruz Chamelion single speed. I am looking forward to hitting the Peru trails on the Bottle Rocket.

If it can be ridden, I'll give it a go whether on land, water or snow...

Cheers,

Bevan

1. What access to bike parts will we have in the event of various problems? ie; busted rear derailleur or hanger, fried brake pads etc? will Wayo be carrying parts?

-Wayo will have a few parts and there are decent stores in Lima and Cusco, but I suggest you bring:

-rear derailleur hanger
-any specialty parts for your bike that are unique to your bike

2. on that note- Wayo, what tools will you be carrying? will we have access to a good shop in lima and Cuzco?

-Wayo will have almost all the tools you'd expect to need on a trip. See above for shops.

3. First aid supplies- again, what will our guides have?

-we have a comprehensive safety and evacuation plan. That means we have a daily trip plan with evacuation protocols for each trail, communications devices (2-way radios, cell phones, sat phones), and full first aid kit, along with splints and spineboards. I have just completed a risk management assessment with Pinnacle Risk Management, and we have gone over our safety protocols with a fine-tooth comb. So rest assured that you will be in safe hands!

4. Food and Drink questions:
- we've been told to be VERY careful about eating and drinking in Peru--
will there be bottled water throughout our days? will the breakfast and lunch menus be safe for us? what kinds of snacks will you offer?

-Bottled water will be provided every day. All restaurants are selected for their attention to health and sanitary concerns, however Peru is a developing country and we can't possibly reduce the risk to zero. One of the best ways to reduce the risk is to bring Purell and wash your hands with it frequently, especially before every meal. As for snacks Wayo will have a good selection of packaged, safe snacks.

5. other bike questions:
what kind of tires do you suggest we run? Megan Illingsworth(October trip 2007) told us that we'll get lots of flats --how many tubes should we bring?

-Bring DH tubes, and beefy tires (2.4" or up). I'd suggest bringing at least 4 tubes with you.

6. Clothing suggestions: can you give us a better idea re: clothing for the month of May for the areas we are going to? will long pants and long sleeves be the wise choice for most of the rides?

-it's pretty hot in May (as it is most of the year), but it gets chilly at altitude, and most of the rides are at altitude. I usually wear shorts, but long pants wouldn't be out of the question. Long sleeved jersey is a good choice.

7. any advice/suggestions re: insurance coverage for bikes in terms of theft and loss? the trip insurance only covers $500 for "luggage"-

-I have a deal with an insurance company, with insurance tailored for this type of travel. If you need insurance, please e-mail me: ride@sacredrides.com

8. Wayo, will there be a 2nd guide? do you have a satellite phone? what is your First Aid training and background?

-there is a 2nd guide, and a Sat Phone. Wayo has full Wilderness First Aid training.

9. Immunizations-- do you suggest we get the Rabies innoculation? will we enounter a lot of stray dogs who like to chase etc?

-I'd skip on rabies - expensive and unnecessary. Dogs bark a lot, but they don't generally bite. Neither Wayo nor I have encountered any bites on multiple trips.

10. Altitude Sickness: do you suggest we take the Altitude Sickness medication before we start our days in Cuzco? do most of your clients opt for this?

-bring Diamox if you want, but I would say keep it on the ready just in case, rather than taking in advance. Most people haven't had any problems, and any problems so far have been minor.

11. a few of us are nervous about the driving and vehicle transportation. we have heard "stories" about how nerve-racking this can be. will we have a good driver and vehicle? what can you tell us about this?

-the roads are certainly on the 'exciting' side. But the vehicles are top-notch, as are the drivers. For instance, Pablo, your driver in Lima, has driven the road to Olleros about 400 times. Without incident.

12. can Karen bring her butane curling iron?

-oh yeah, if you can get it on the plane.

13. is there a good place in Cuzco for Tamara to get a pedicure?

-oh yeah. Seriously.

14. Kirsten wants to know if a Peruvian wax is as "appealing" as a Brazilian?

-ouch. I don't think they have the Brazilian savvy for waxing.

thank you for reading our questions-- I guess the question about the bike insurance and bike parts are the most pressing at this point. We want to take care of these items in the next few weeks. Thanks in advance for your patience!!

Karen, I didn't know that stunt had a name, but yes, thats the coaster on Lower Crippler, on a very wet cold day a few years ago. There was snow at the top of Upper Oilcan... good times.
